Medical Treatments

Endodontics is the medical science, in the context of dentistry that is concerned with the internal tissues of the tooth, the diseases and related treatments. When a caries or trauma arrive to expose the pulp of the tooth (which is present both in the crown of the tooth is in the inner part consists of vessels and nerves) or otherwise come to inflame causing a pulpitis (the classic toothache) this, after have hurt more or less long, it goes into necrosis (in other words dies.).

In this case, root canal treatment can save the tooth.

When you need endodontic treatment?

Is necessary to resort to endodontic therapy in the presence of:

Deep caries lesion resulting in inflammation of the pulp tissue and bacterial contamination (pulpitis). If left untreated, the infection may progress to cause necrosis of the pulp itself and increase the incidence of root diseases and periodontal (gum ligament-bone)

Granuloma, a disease linked to inflammation pulp. In this case, the infection spreads beyond the end of the root of the tooth with consequent involvement of surrounding tissues and bone.

Root canal treatment or root canal therapy

Root canal therapy involves the removal of inflamed or necrotic pulpal tissue of the tooth, both at the level of the crown is at the level of the root, in order to eliminate the infection often painful for the patient and to ensure the preservation of the tooth itself.

This procedure is commonly referred to as “root canal”, since it deprives the tooth nerve endings and vascular disorders that make it vital and sensitive.

The process of root canal treatment involves some basic steps:

  • Emptying of the crown and the root canals of the tooth through the removal of the pulp tissue necrotic and shaping the channels to make them suitable to receive the filling material
  • Root canal cleaning and sterilization to prevent the spread of bacteria and toxins
  • Insertion of the medication within the channels
  • Permanent filling of the channels by means of the root canal filling material
  • X-ray control of the outcome.

The interventions of root canal treatment involves the use of modern equipment and sophisticated nickel titanium apex locators. The latter are able to determine with extreme precision the anatomy and the length of the root canal to be treated in order to avoid the risk of granulomas, while reducing the use of radiologic tools.

Occasionally it is possible that a dead tooth in need of a new intervention of root canal therapy. The endodontic retreatment is performed in the case of devitalized teeth in an incomplete or in the presence of new lesions or granulomatous abscess.
